Keeping Copper Cookware Kickin’

If you’re looking to give your kitchen a boost, or just in need of a change of pace, you might want to think about copper.

For starters, it can add a blast of warmth to that area of your kitchen that is currently filled with dull, black cookware. More than that, copper cookware is fantastic at conducting heat, and will probably cook your meals better than normal if you currently have just a discount cookware set in your kitchen.

At the top of my list is All Clad Copper Cookware. If you’re looking for that warm gleam of copper, you’ll want to go with their Cop R Chef cookware. But, you can also get just a hint of copper mixed with the full shine of stainless steel in the All Clad Copper Core line.

One concern with copper is that it tends to be a metal that tarnishes easily. If you’ve ever had a new penny in your possession for a while you will probably have noticed how fast it reacts with heat and air, turning it a less attractive brown. While it will take a little more work than just washing it like normal dishes, getting the copper to shine again is very easy. First of all, you could get a hold of some Bar Keepers Friend. A great product for cleaning and polishing metal.

There are also some home made copper cleaners you can create right in your own home. You can either mix together one part salt and two parts lemon juice, or you can mix equal parts salt, flour, and white vinegar. With either, it only takes a small amount. Heck, in a pinch you could even use ketchup. All three options are acidic and that seems to do the trick.

Keep in mind that you CAN go too far with copper. You’ll want to stick with quality stainless steel flatware and not jump into the copper flatware world. Copper doesn’t just react with acid by getting shiny, it also transfers a metallic taste. You might not notice that with the cleaners because you shouldn’t be eating the cleaner when you’re done. Use copper with acidic food like tomatoes, and you’ll have a taste you weren’t looking for.

Easy to manage and great for cooking, add copper to your kitchen to get it kickin’!
