Anxiety In This Day And Age

Anxiety has been dubbed “the disease of the modern era”. It is a term coined for several disorders that cause many symptoms, such as nervousness, apprehension, worrying and fear. These disorders often affect most aspects of life, such as attitude, moods and behaviors. More so, anxiety can even manifest real and alarming physical symptoms. Anxiety in general can be vague and a little bit unsettling, but severe cases of anxiety can cause extreme and serious impacts on a person’s activities of daily living.

Normally, people are in constant battle with anxiety. Those who suffer from anxiety experience the symptoms if they face something challenging and influential, such as talking to someone they genuinely like, applying for a job, or taking a test, among many others. These feelings of being anxious are often considered to be within normal parameters and easily justifiable. It only becomes a concern when the symptoms start to interfere with a person’s ability to do activities of daily living, ability to sleep, and even the normal thought processes. Anxiety is often identified as an overreaction to something that normally elicits a normal reaction to a situation.

General Anxiety Disorder

There are many types of anxiety, one of which is GAD or General Anxiety Disorder. It is described as a chronic occurrence of anxiety characterized by long-lasting anxiety and worry about nonspecific life events or even in some cases, unknown sources. People who are suffering from GAD often feel worried and scared about the normal avenues of human endeavor, such as health, money, family, work or school. They struggle in both identifying the specific fear and controlling their exaggerated worries. Their fear is often blown out of proportion and grounded on the unreal.  These people normally expect failure or disaster to the point that they are no longer able to do the normal functions they do in the workplace, school and even in social events and relationships.

Panic Disorder

Another type of anxiety is panic disorder. It is a type of anxiety which is mainly characterized by sudden and brief episodes of intensified terror and exaggerated apprehension that leads to shaking, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty in breathing, among many others. Panic attacks usually arise suddenly and peak in a span of 10 minutes. However, in some reported cases, it may even last for a few hours.  Panic disorders usually happen after a quite startling and traumatic experience, or even just the simple prolonged stress, but also they can be spontaneous in nature. A panic attack may lead some people to be aware of any changes in their usual bodily functions and thinking of it as a life threatening event, which is called hyper vigilance that is usually followed by hypochondriasis.
